Motherland and I

My beloved motherland is a country both old and young. She is old. It has always been said our motherland is a big oriental civilization country stretching back several thousands of years. She is young, because the People's Republic of China is just 60 years old. In my life, I witnessed HK and Macao’s return to the motherland under the policy of “One Country, Two Systems” at the time of her rise to power. In the 60th founding anniversary of China, my dear colleagues and I were on duty at security points as radio equipment inspectors. We couldn’t watch the exciting military parade with our own eyes even through we were the closest to the Tiananmen Square. But we know how passionate we were that we could serve the motherland. As a Chinese, my pride was beyond words at that moment.
My beloved motherland is a country that has witnessed some turbulent times but never gave up. Over the millennia, the Chinese nation has suffered many disasters, surmounted all kinds of difficulties and challenges, and made her way to where she proudly stands today. When I was in university, SARS broke out. Even now I could clearly remember our motherland mobilized the whole nation to fight an arduous and soul-stirring battle against this disaster. I am reminded of the devastating earthquake in Sichuan. Our motherland confronted the disaster boldly, fought against suffering, and rebuilt new town on the top of the ruins. The experience of the Chinese nation attests to a truth: what a nation loses in times of disaster will be made up for by her progress.

My beloved motherland is a country that values her traditions while opening her arms to the outside world.  The traditional Chinese culture is rich, extensive and profound. In 2008, I took the cherished opportunity to be a member of the testing group of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games. For my work, I could fortunately coordinate with international customers, such as NBC, OMEGA, BOB etc. I gradually got to know the way they work and think. At the same time, I found that they were all glad to understand what the Chinese people are thinking and doing as well as what we are interested in. The Beijing Olympic Games showcased a colorful China to the world, both ancient and modern while taking the broad stage. To me, this is a unique treasure to my entire life.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
Even we are witnessing one of the steadiest periods of peaceful reformation in contemporary Chinese history. The journey ahead of catching up with developed country will be long and arduous. We should not just concern ourselves with the pursuit of personal goals. Instead, we should keep the motherland in mind and the whole world in view. We rise or fall as one nation, as one people. With our destiny in our own hands, we will stand together to thrive prosperously for our motherland! Yes we can!
