My story of growing up and my country

Well, ladies and gentlemen, honorable judges, good afternoon. I am Tang Ruomi from Chengdu Radio Monitoring Station. Just as you know, our motherland ushered in her 60th birthday. On this day worth celebrating, I’d like to give you a discourse about my story of growing up and my country..
I was born in May, 1982 in a small town named Nanchong in Sichuan province. As a Chinese, I was so fortunate to have experienced three of the ten-year anniversaries of the birthday of my country. I remembered the 40th birthday of our country in 1989, which was the first time I comprehended China’s birthday. I was only 7 years old at that time and had just entered primary school. For the first time I knew what the National Flag looked like, and I remembered how it made me feel full of pride. In that year, there were two events which I remembered most clearly. The first one was an essay competition on the motherland for her 40th birthday held by my school. I entered and did very well. I got 5th place out of all of the students in my school. I remember that my mum helped me to find China on the map of the world. Our nation’s like a smart rooster. I remember that my dad taught me a saying from Chairman Mao “the rooster crows, morning has broken” .
The second event was when I had been elected to the first batch of Young Pioneers. When I was standing in front of the mausoleums of the martyrs and yelled the oath with my hand raised, looking at the National Flag, I felt so proud and excited.
As I grew up, I came to understand the love of our motherland deeply. When I had finished my first year studying at high school in 1999, it happened to be the 50th year since China had been found. I had got an opportunity to go to a summer camp in the U.K. with 23 other students from high schools around Sichuan province. We spent an amazing time in England which I will never forget.
As we arrived in a seaside town named Burmouth in the south of England, we were sent to The Kings’ School, a famous school in which students from different countries throughout the world studied English and western cultures. On the first day we began to learn at that school there was an examination to test our English level. As I entered school the next day, I saw my name was written on the top of the list on the wall——I had the highest score of all the students in the school. I felt so proud that I could represent my country so well. When I entered into the A1 Class, the best class, I saw that there were 16 students and I was the only Chinese. I felt more apart of China at that moment than any other time in my life!
How time flies! It seems like it has been a twinkling of an eye but ten years have passed. It’s already 2009. The People’s Republic of China ushered in her 60-year-old birthday. And I, became a radio worker. I came to this work field early last year, and I gloried in doing this job. We are guardians of the air of the Republic. We have to defend the airwaves with our lives. We will fight all our lives to provide a stable, harmonious and prosperous homeland!
Now I am standing here passionately to give my gift——an ode—— to our motherland for her 60th birthday. I can only praise her by using simple words. I can only give back to her with hard work. I firmly believe that I will witness the 70th birthday of my country, and the 80th, the 90th, the 100th…… Friends! Let us stand shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, make every effort to work and bless our dear motherland, and witness the better future of our country!
